A Journey from Pune to the Diamond City Surat

Welcome to smart city Surat

Life teaches us how to live, how to treat other people, and how to survive. It’s like ice; if you value it, it will go easy; otherwise, it melts.

I turned on the new chapter from the hectic life schedule and traveled from Pune to Surat. So I booked the second tier in Daund- Indore express, which reached Pune station. Where I see people rushing, some are talking about business overcall, but I was the one who completed everything a day before the journey. There are many best travel deals you can find online.

Train Journey

After waiting an hour, I purchased a Frooti and started sipping; around 3.30 PM, I saw the train finally arrive on the platform. I was excited because finally I got some time for myself, and guess what? A man was next to me talking to his wife and asked me, which station are you traveling to? I was like, first relax and chill (prompted secretly) well I said till Surat. He took a deep breath, and I understood that he must be happy that the seat would be vacant after Surat and he could relax more.

The train reaches Lonavala, one of my favorite destinations, especially during rains when I feel the drop on my face with the misty clouds all over the sky and the mountains hide in the clouds. This is how Lonavala is. The train was moving, and I saw the green fields and the people. During those moments I started thinking about my past, like from where I began and the overall journey so far in life.

After an hour, Kalyan Junction arrived, purchased a water bottle, and had idli sambhar along with the tea. My curiosity increased slowly as I had never been to Gujarat before. Then finally, after Vasai Road Junction, I reached Surat city around 10.30 PM. I saw people selling tea. Some are carrying luggage, a few people are in tears, and some are happy to meet their loved ones. Overall I was surrounded by people with mixed emotions and feelings.

Surat Junction Arrives

It was a new city for me, and the city was about to sleep. So I called my brother, and patiently I waited for him. Meanwhile, I thought of having Tea, I ordered a tea, and the taste was new; the tea seller had added ginger and mint leaves. So when I had my first sip, the taste was the same as ginger tea, but in the end, it leaves you with a minty flavor. By this time, my brother had arrived at the station, and we proceeded towards the place called ‘Adajan’ (a place 25 minutes away from the station). One of the best places to go in Surat.

When I was in the car towards my destination, I witnessed the Gujarati culture depicted on the wall. Also, people talked in Gujarati, which was new to me. By this time, finally, I reached my apartment. After freshening up, we ordered ‘Gujarati Thali’ that typically includes one or two steamed or fried snacks called farsans, a green vegetable, a tuber or a gourd shaak (shaaks are main courses with vegetables and spices mixed into a curry or a spicy dry dish), a kathol (braised pulses like beans, chickpea or dry peas).

The day beings

I noticed that people prefer to have spicy food in Maharashtra, but in Gujarat, they add little sweetness to most dishes. And I dived into the full flavor of Gujarati food, and it was outstanding in taste. The sweet curry they made was incredible, and the Khichdi makes a good combination. When you mix the khichdi with the curry, you get an aroma that raises your taste buds, and the flavor of the curry is like a ‘Curry Leaves’ (Murraya koenigii). So once you start eating, you actually get the authentic taste of the culture. By this time, my stomach was full, and I finally had buttermilk.

Then I decided to talk a few rounds in the society, and the security guard said ‘Sir aapko pehle kabhi yaha dekha nahi’ it means Sir, I have never seen you before. So I simply replied am new here; it was a moment where I saw the loyalty on his face, and he was doing his job.

After the walk, I finally came to my room, and I had many new plans that had already been scheduled for the next day.

It was 7.30 AM when the sunlight fell on my face. I saw some pigeons on my window the next day. They were saying, like wake up. So I went to the window. I see that parents are taking their children to school, the Municipal corporation people are sweeping the roads, milk delivery boys are rushing towards their destination, and overall the world is again back to their work.

Dumas Beach

Located around the Arabian Sea, Dumas beach is one of the most haunted beaches in India. Before coming here, I watched a few videos where people were talking about some negative energy they felt. I was like, no problem, I am going in a day, so this boosts my confidence level. From Surat Airport it is approx. 6.8km, and the overall place was filled with peace. Often referred to as the ‘Jewel of the West,’ Gujarat is a land of magnificent palaces and temples, beautiful beaches, and natural terrain.

Dumas Beach in South Gujarat is one such place, famous for its black sand and tranquility. Folklore indicates that the beach was used as a burial ground for Hindus, resulting in black sand, as remains of people buried here are said to haunt it still. If you are craving a thrilling and spooky experience, don’t forget to visit Dumas Beach – one of the most haunted places in India.

Galaxy Revolving Restaurant

After experiencing the beach and the fresh air, I felt hungry, and unfortunately, there were so many options to eat. So I moved back towards the city, and it was already 6.30 PM, and my eyes went towards a restaurant named Galaxy Revolving Restaurant in Pal Gam. The restaurant’s special and most attractive part revolves slowly, and the waiter serves food on that platform. The platform is round in shape, and everyone is having dinner on that platform. The revolving speed was very slow. Therefore I didn’t feel any distractions.

As a starter, I ordered ‘Hara Bhara Kabab’ and ‘Paneer Neeza Tikka’; the roasted and the peas smell was extraordinary. When I opened the Kabab from the middle, the smoky air was floating, the peas and malai smell were all over my taste buds. In the main course, I ordered ‘Subzi Bemisal.’ It was a mix of all veggies tossed with Indian spices on a high flame that leaves a very tempting smell.

After completing the dinner, now it was time for me to have something sweet, so I ordered a chocolate chip shake; this was something very different from what I had in my entire life. The shake was filled with floating chocolate chips. While having the shake, I was chewing the chips with my teeth, and that feeling was amazing. The shake was thick, and it was purely a chocolate delight. You can find best hotel deals near by this side.

Dilli Ke Chole Bhature

We all love north Indian food, and we keep on searching for a place to have proper and authentic north Indian food. Apart from the Gujarati food, in Surat, if you wish to have a Delhi style ‘Chole Bhature,’ don’t miss ‘Dilli Ke Chole Bhature’ in the Textile Market location. When I ordered, I could see the dark brown color of the Chola, along with thick-cut Onions and a slice of Lemon. Trust me; the Chola was well cooked in those spices that you won’t find anywhere when I taste them, actually. The butter melts in the Chola, and the layer of butter spreads all over, and the smell of butter in a Chola gives an awesome feeling and happiness inside my soul.

Diamond Market

I only read in books that Surat is known as the world’s diamond city because 90% of the diamonds are polished in this city. When I entered that location, we could see the richness and local people doing the diamond business. The diamonds are also exported from South Africa directly to Surat, and the city is a hub for diamond cutting and polishing. A large variety and best quality of the diamond necklace, rings, and bangles were showcased. My eyes were shining like stars. But the drawback is during the procedure. I observed that a lot of pollution is also generated during cutting and polishing the diamonds.

I was already tired by this time, and I decided to go back and relax. And again, the security guard asked, and this time he had a different question; he asked, “ Kaha Kaha Ghume?” But overall, after seeing his innocent face, I simply replied, “Kaafi Jagah.”

In the evening I went to ‘Kathiawadi,’ a restaurant named. I had ordered ‘Gatte ki Subzi’ with Roti and Chaas. The taste was authentic and gave the flavor of Gujarat. This was my last night in Surat. I was a bit emotional because I felt connected. I felt connected with the language, people, and city. Next time I will try to stay longer and explore more places.

Surat City’s weather is the same as Pune City; of course, the traditions and cultures differ. However, the people are friendly and cooperative in both cities; it’s like a home away from home.

See you in a new city next time to give you different experiences and reveal the new culture.
