The Trimbakeshwar temple, located near the Brahmagiri mountains, 30 km from Nasik, is venerated as one of Lord Shiva’s 12 jyotirlingas and as the origin of the Godavari River. The fantastic feature of the jyotirlinga here is that it has three faces, embodying Lord Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva. But unfortunately, excessive water use has caused the lingam to start eroding. Subsequently, people believe that this erosion signifies the eroding nature of today’s human society. A golden crown, made up of many precious stones and dating back to the age of the Pandavas, covers the lingas.
Trimbakeshwar Temple History
According to the Shiva Purana, once upon a time, Brahma (the Hindu God of creation) and Vishnu (the Hindu God of preservation) argued over the supremacy of creation. To put them to the test, Shiva pierced the three worlds as a massive, never-ending pillar of light known as the jyotirlinga. To find the end of the light in either direction, Vishnu and Brahma split their paths downwards and upwards, respectively. Brahma falsely claimed to have discovered the end, whereas Vishnu acknowledged his defeat. Eventually, Shiva manifested as the second pillar of light and cursed Brahma, declaring that he would have no place in ceremonies while Vishnu would be perpetually worshiped.
The jyotirlinga is the supreme partless reality from which Shiva appears in part. Thus, the Jyotirlinga shrines are locations where Shiva manifested as a fiery column of light. Initially, there were believed to be 64 jyotirlingas, with 12 of them considered highly auspicious and sacred. Each of the twelve jyotirlinga sites is individually dedicated to a presiding deity, representing distinct manifestations of Shiva. At these sacred locations, the central image is a lingam, symbolizing the timeless and boundless Stambha pillar, which signifies Shiv’s infinite nature. Additionally, these jyotirlingas are situated in various regions across India, including Somnath in Gujarat, Mallikarjuna in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh, Mahakaleswar in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in the Himalayas, Bhimashankar in Maharashtra, Viswanath in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra, Vaidyanath in Jharkhand, Nageshwar Temple in Dwaraka, Gujarat, Rameshwar Temple in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, and Grishneshwar Temple in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.

The Trimbakeshwar darshan timings are: 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
- Special Pooja – 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM
- Madhyan Pooja – 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM
- Golden Crown of Shiva – 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM
The main pooja done here is the Rudra Abhishek. It is a ritual where Panchamrut Pooja is offered to Lord Trimbakeshwar with hymns to fulfill the wishes of the concerned devotee.
