History Of This Place:
Ladakh has several petroglyphs dating back 5000 years to the Iron Age, the Bronze Age, the Kushan era (30-375 AD) and even the 15th century. The rock art of Ladakh consists of stone drawings called petroglyphs. Ladakh rock art are concentrated around the Indus and its tributaries. It is also represented in all parts of Ladakh and Kargil, including Zanskar, Changthang and Nubra. But in several places, the rock paintings are at risk of being damaged and destroyed. This damage are caused by roads, housing and other development projects. We believe that the establishment of the RAU will play a key role in preserving them. Together with other interested organizations they must also increase local community awareness and ownership of this valuable cultural.
